Schedule: Full-Time | Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Days may vary slightly based on laboratory workload)

Position Overview
GSG Talent Solutions is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Microbiologist II to support the Parasitology Branch of the Public Health Laboratory at the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in Austin, Texas. The ideal candidate will attend work on a regular, predictable schedule and perform complex microscopic examinations to identify parasitic infections, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy, quality, and laboratory safety.  
Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnostic Specimen Testing: Process and perform complex examinations of clinical specimens (including human blood, feces, and other bodily fluids) using various parasite staining and concentration methods. Detect, examine, and identify worms and miscellaneous parasite specimens.  
  • Workflow Coordination & Reporting: Partner with the Senior Microbiologist and Team Leader to prioritize workload and complete tasks efficiently. Accurately enter, review, and release diagnostic test results into the Laboratory Information System.  
  • Customer Service & Consultation: Provide technical consultation and customer service by telephone as appropriate, ensuring decisions align with instructions approved by the Team Leader or Branch Manager.  
  • Quality Assurance & Maintenance: Perform routine quality control and preventive maintenance procedures in strict accordance with the Team’s procedure manual. Document issues regarding specimen acceptability or reporting, submitting them to leadership for corrective action. Help update and maintain the digital imaging library.  
  • Training & Special Projects: Assist in training laboratory staff, visiting technologists, students, and interns, including preparing training exercises and workshops. Participate in continuing education, scientific conferences, and special development projects to optimize laboratory testing methodologies.  
  • Safety & Emergency Response: Maintain full compliance with DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal safety guidelines. Serve in a supporting role for agency disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation if required, which may include alternate shift patterns, location changes, or weekend/holiday testing.  
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Medical Parasitology, including the morphology, life cycles, and epidemiology of human parasites.  
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory quality control practices and the ability to operate brightfield, dissecting, and fluorescence microscopes safely and accurately.  
  • Proven skill in manipulating standard laboratory equipment with speed, precision, and adherence to biosafety measures.  
  • Ability and willingness to safely handle highly infectious clinical specimens (feces, blood, sputum, urine, etc.).  
  • Meticulous attention to detail with the ability to follow standardized protocols and troubleshoot testing deviations.  
  • Proficiency using computers for word processing, spreadsheet applications, database analysis, and result reporting.  
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work harmoniously and effectively within a team environment, even under stressful conditions.
