Hours: Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (40 hours per week, no OT); minimum of 2 Saturdays per month required

Job Description:

GSG Talent Solutions, a prominent staffing agency in Austin, TX, is seeking a dedicated Microbiologist I for a contract position. As a Microbiologist I, you will work under moderate supervision in our Newborn Screening (NBS) Specimen Receiving Group, exhibiting a commitment to delivering precise and timely results. This role involves receiving and processing specimens, ensuring accuracy, and providing exemplary customer service. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to assist in training and mentoring other laboratory staff.

Responsibilities Include:

• Receiving and processing specimens received by the Public Health Laboratory (PHL) Division.
• Investigating causes for errors/discrepancies and reporting problems.
• Training and mentoring other laboratory employees.
• Providing excellent customer service.
• Completing assigned tasks including specimen processing, documentation, and quality control measures.
• Assisting in the maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Handling specimens and samples safely and accurately.
• Providing logistical and technical support as needed.
• Occasionally lifting and carrying packages up to 50 lbs., with assistance required for heavier items.
• Delivering or picking up packages via state vehicle.

Requirements:

• Basic knowledge of microbiological and chemical principles, techniques, and terminology.
• Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and sample handling techniques.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in following written and verbal instructions.
• Competence in using laboratory equipment and computers.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Aptitude for following standard operating procedures accurately.
• Skill in providing exceptional customer service.
• Capability to prioritize tasks and delegate effectively.
• Initiative and willingness to take on responsibilities.
