Position Overview:
GSG is seeking an Epidemiologist III (Experienced) for a contract position with a focus on tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology and surveillance. Candidates must be based in or near Austin, TX, and able to report to the office in central Austin. Applications from outside the Austin area will not be accepted.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the assessment of cluster and contact investigations conducted by public health regions (PHRs) and local health departments (LHDs) TB programs.
- Provide guidance to the team, health regions, and LHDs on managing TB outbreaks and complex investigations.
- Participate in high-profile contact investigations and provide epidemiologic direction.
- Prepare and oversee TB alerts and close-out investigation reports.
- Act as a subject matter expert on TB outbreaks, contact investigations, and complex TB cluster evaluations using Whole Genome Sequencing and other data.
- Develop protocols for high-profile contact investigations, including those in academic institutions, congregate settings, and media-sensitive environments.
- Collaborate across program areas to ensure accurate assessments of surveillance and reporting activities.
- Assign tasks, evaluate team performance, and train members in epidemiologic activities.
- Conduct cluster analysis and establish epidemiologic linkages using Whole Genome Sequencing.
- Promote evidence-based practices by liaising with teams, health departments, and providers.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
- Principles of epidemiology and public health laws governing notifiable conditions.
- Transmission of infectious diseases, particularly TB.
- Medical terminology, data management, and statistical methods.
- Current social, economic, and public health issues.
Skills:
- Proficient in software tools, including Access, Excel, SPSS, SAS, and PowerPoint.
- Interpreting diagnostic laboratory results and medical chart data.
- Strong written communication, including editing and report writing.
- Statistical analysis and mathematical computation.
Abilities:
- Adhere to organizational standards of conduct and policies.
- Conduct trainings and deliver effective public presentations.
- Organize workloads, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Plan and oversee TB outbreaks and contact investigation activities.
- Guide complex TB investigations and prepare comprehensive reports.
- Build effective relationships with stakeholders and team members.
- Present complex information to diverse audiences clearly and concisely.
- Work independently while exercising sound judgment.
- Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment and maintain confidentiality.
