Position Overview
The Epidemiologist II supports the Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) program by reviewing, analyzing, and managing infectious disease case data in accordance with state and federal guidelines. This role plays a critical part in disease surveillance, case investigation, and public health reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, validate, and approve cases in NEDSS in alignment with DSHS and CDC protocols
- Apply established case definitions and perform data quality checks
- Escalate complex or unclear cases to senior epidemiology staff for final review
- Conduct case investigations and perform laboratory data entry as needed
- Document progress and provide regular status updates on case backlog and workload
- Generate notifications and approvals for cases within Houston and Harris County jurisdictions
Required Knowledge & Experience
- Strong understanding of epidemiology principles and basic biostatistics
- Knowledge of infectious diseases, especially vaccine-preventable diseases
- Experience with infectious disease surveillance systems
- Familiarity with laboratory procedures (PCR, PFGE, WGS preferred)
- Experience with data management and quality control processes
- Understanding of confidentiality and data protection standards

- Ability to conduct epidemiological investigations and analyze findings
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
- Experience managing and tracking multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and handle complex assignments
- Experience interpreting laboratory results and applying findings to case investigations
