Job Description
Under minimal supervision by the Vaccine Preventable Disease Group, performs the following tasks:
· Review, validate, and approve cases in NEDSS following DSHS and CDC protocols.
· Apply established case definitions and data quality checks.
· Escalate complex or ambiguous cases to VPD epidemiology staff for final adjudication.
· Document progress and provide weekly status reports on backlog reduction.
· Perform case investigation and/or laboratory data entry for cases within City of Houston or Harris County jurisdictions, including creating notifications and approvals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
List the knowledge, skills, and abilities critical to performance in this position:
· Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of epidemiology and related biostatistics; infectious diseases; and how causes of disease affect epidemiologic practices.
· Knowledge of data management procedures.
· Knowledge of rules relating to confidential information.
· Knowledge of manual file maintenance procedures and DSHS record retention rules.
· Knowledge of office practices, administrative procedures, English, spelling, punctuation, proofreading, and editing.
· Skill in conducting epidemiological investigations; the use of scientific rules and methods to solve problems; the use of logic and reasoning and the ability to identify alternative solutions; and the use of a computer and applicable software.
· Skill in the use of computers and software, particularly Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.

· Skill in organizing, tracking, and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
· Skill in planning, organizing, and applying tact and diplomacy to accomplish assignments.
· Ability to conduct epidemiological investigations and to communicate effectively.

· Ability to express ideas clearly, accurately, concisely and diplomatically, both verbally and in writing.
· Ability to analyze and solve work problems.
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or similar degree, and 2 years of experience
Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Hours per week: 30 hours a week (flexible)
Work Days: Monday - Friday
